Public holidays in Tenerife in 2027: national, Canary and local dates

Updated 29 October 2026 · DoTenerife

Tenerife has 14 public holidays in 2027 in each town: 11 that apply across the Canary Islands, the Tenerife island holiday for the Virgin of Candelaria on Tuesday 2 February, and two local holidays chosen by each municipality. The dates below come from the official Spanish and Canary Islands labour calendars and the municipal holidays published in the Boletín Oficial de Canarias (BOC) in 2026.

On public holidays, buses run a Sunday-style timetable, banks and offices close, and many shops outside the tourist resorts shut. Bars, restaurants and most attractions in the resorts usually stay open.

Playa de las Américas is split between Arona and Adeje, so which local holidays apply depends on which side of the Barranco del Rey you are on.

The two Carnival Tuesdays

In 2027, Carnival Tuesday falls on 9 February in the church calendar, but Santa Cruz de Tenerife has scheduled its carnival later in the season and takes 23 February as its local holiday. Several nearby municipalities, including Candelaria, follow Santa Cruz. Our Santa Cruz Carnival guide has the latest on 2027 dates.

What happens on public holidays

  • Buses: TITSA usually runs a Sunday or holiday timetable. See Tenerife buses.
  • Shops: big supermarkets and resort shops often open; smaller shops in towns may close.
  • Banks and offices: closed.
  • Pharmacies: a duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia) stays open in each area.
  • Bars and entertainment: in the resorts, it’s business as usual, and some holidays bring extra events. DoTenerife’s events calendar and festivals listings show what’s on.

Busy holiday periods

Christmas and New Year, Carnival, Easter week and August are the busiest times on the island, with more Spanish and Canarian visitors alongside international holidaymakers. Book accommodation, hire cars and popular restaurants ahead. Our Tenerife events 2027 guide highlights the big dates, and you can browse upcoming events closer to the time.

Dates are taken from official publications, but local councils can occasionally amend them. If a specific date matters for your plans, check with the town hall or your hotel.
