About Sala Capitular del Exconvento de Santo Domingo
The Sala Capitular is the former chapter house of the Exconvento de Santo Domingo, one of the oldest religious complexes in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The Dominican friars founded their community in 1522 and began building here in 1527, and they stayed until the closure of the monasteries in 1836. Since then the building has been a parish house, a church prison, a bishop's residence and a seminary. The whole complex was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2008.
Today the convent is used by La Laguna council for culture. The Sala Capitular hosts poetry recitals, talks and small events, while the convent's art rooms and cloister host free exhibitions and the Santo Domingo en Ciclo season of music, theatre, dance and comedy, often with Canarian performers.
The convent stands at the historic entrance to the old town, next to the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, where the corsair Amaro Pargo is buried. Look out for the two cloisters, the bell gable and the old dragon tree.
